What Should You Do If You Experience a Dental Emergency?
Dental emergencies come in many forms, and knowing what one looks like can help you take action faster. In general, a dental emergency is a situation requiring urgent dental treatment to relieve pain, control an infection, save a tooth, or stop bleeding.
Dental emergencies are often stressful situations. The first thing you should do is to contact our office for an appointment. Our well-trained team will give you the proper guidance to deal with the emergency in the best way possible. Keep in mind that the quicker you act, the better your chances are of saving a damaged tooth and reducing the possibility of additional oral health concerns.
If you or a loved one experiences a life-threatening emergency, you need to call 911 immediately for assistance.
What Are the Most Common Dental Emergencies?
Here are the most common type of dental emergencies we treat and things you can do to help stabilize your condition before receiving emergency dental care:
Persistent toothache: If you experience sudden tooth pain that is intense or gets progressively worse, scheduling an appointment with Dr. Punia and having him identify the issue is the best approach. A cold compress will help reduce the discomfort until you arrive at our dental office.
Cracked or Chipped Tooth: Rinse your mouth with warm water and use a cold compress to help keep any swelling down. Collect any pieces of the affected tooth, if any, and bring them to your emergency appointment.
Knocked-Out Tooth: If you knock out a tooth, pick it up by its crown and rinse it gently with water while avoiding scrubbing or touching the root. If possible, gently return the tooth to its socket. Otherwise, carry it in a small container of milk, not water, and bring it with you to your emergency appointment.
Bleeding: Bleeding of the lips, gums, inside of the mouth, or tongue can occur because of damage to the soft tissues. Rinse with warm water and apply pressure to control it. Please call 911 or head to your nearest hospital emergency room if you cannot stop the bleeding.
Other Common Dental Emergencies: If you have a loose tooth, broken dentures, damaged restorations, or any other concerns, please contact our office to schedule an appointment. We will provide guidance on what to do until you get to your appointment.
